Joining

The WIP (Work In Progress) group is an informal collection of people. It has no president or other officers. Being on its Google Group is as close as one can get to being a member.

The group began in order to give piano teacher Harry Viar's students a chance to practice performing in front of others in preparation for a yearly student recital. Harry is gone, as are the recitals, but the group continues to provide a safe and welcoming place for people to publicly perform pieces that are works-in-progress. A perfect, polished performance is not required.

The group is not limited to works-in-progress. You are welcome to perform any piece of music that you want to share with others. And while the group consists mostly of piano players playing classical pieces, all instruments and music genres are welcome.

If you have questions about the group, you can send an email to the current WIP organizer at works-in-progress-wip_owner@googlegroups.com.

Joining WIP

You must have a Google account to join (f you don't have one, see "Obtaining a Google Account" below):

  • Sign in to your Google account.
  • Go to the WIP Google Group.
  • Select “Ask to join group”
  • Fill in the fields. Under “Reason for joining”, enter your full name and a short description of why you want to join.

The group owner will either approve your request or ask you some follow-up questions. You will need to wait for approval before gaining access to the group.

Configure Your Preferences

Once approved, you can go to the group and set up your preferences:

The most important preference might be "Email used for membership". Select the email address you'd like WIP messages sent to. If you don't see your preferred email listed in the choices, see the section on "Using Your Preferred Email" below.

Receiving Messages

You can view all messages by visiting our Google Group. By default, you will also receive each group message in an email sent to the email address set in your preferences. Messages coming from the list have the prefix "[wip]" at the start of the subject line.

Sending Messages

You can send messages either through email or on the web.

Important: When replying to a message from the list, be sure to use "Reply" and not "Reply All" or "Reply List" unless your reply needs to be seen by everyone (which could be useful for a group discussion). The best thing to do is to check the "To" and "Cc" fields in your email to see whether works-in-progress-wip@googlegroups.com is included. If it is, everyone will receive your reply.

To send an email to the current WIP organizer, write to works-in-progress-wip_owner@googlegroups.com.

    Leaving the Group

To remove yourself from the list, go to Google Groups, select "My groups" and look for a "Leave group" icon next to the WIP group.

    Obtaining a Google Account

If you don't currently have a Google account, you can create one:
    • Go to google.com.
    • Click on the Sign in button.
    • Select "Create account", then "For my personal use".
    • Provide the requested information. When asked to "Choose your Gmail address", select "Use your existing email" and then enter an existing email address.
    • Continue with any additional steps.

    Using Your Preferred Email

If you already have a Google account, but it uses a different email than what you'd prefer, then:

    • Go to google.com.
    • Make sure you are signed in to your account.
    • Click on the circle icon at the top right and select “Manage your Google account”
    • Select “Personal info”
    • Select “Contact info/Email”
    • Select “Manage alternate emails”
    • Select “+ Add other email”
    • Add your preferred email

Once that's done, go back to the WIP Google Group and select “My membership settings”. Then select your preferred email under “Email used for membership”.
